Men's Swimming Outlook

By: Doug Feeber

The 2002-03 version of the UW-La Crosse men's swimming and diving team will be a young squad, but a squad with plenty of experience. Head coach Rich Pein, who enters his 20th season at the helm of the men's program, returns 15 letter winners from last season. Seven seniors, two juniors, seven sophomores and four freshmen make up the roster.

Several student-athletes had strong performances at last year's Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Championships and helped lead the Eagles to a second-place team

finish. Pein is hoping they continue improving and help the Eagles move closer to the top of the conference standings in 2002-03.

Pein was named the WIAC Men's Co-Coach of the Year last season after leading the Eagles to their second-place team finish.

With a veteran list of returners, which includes several swimmers who saw their first collegiate action a year ago, the Eagles look to be a force in the WIAC and make a return trip to the NCAA III Championships in 2002-03.

Women's Swimming Outlook

By: Jen Scherbal

Youth and experience could be the two words associated with the 2002-03 version of the University of Wisconsin-La Crosse women's swimming and diving team. The Eagles return 17 letter winners from last year's squad which finished third at the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Championships and tied for 32nd at the NCAA Division III Championships. UW-L's roster also shows its youth with nine sophomores and 16 freshmen.

Rich Pein, the WIAC Women's Coach of the Year last season, enters his 17th season at the helm of the Eagles' women's program. After a successful run to last year's national meet, UW-L expects to be near the top of the conference standings and make a claim for a top-15 spot in the country in 2002-03. The Eagles return an experienced squad, and with a blend of youthful excitement, could lead to a breakthrough year.

The diving events are handled by Barry Shockmel, who returns for his 26th season with the program. Schockmel is credited with guiding the development of two of UW-L's finest divers. Drew Peterson rewrote the men's diving records, and Jane Marien was a NAIA champion in 1989 under Schockmel's tutelage.
